Acknowledge a fact and choose a response · D3.4

Acknowledge a fact you cannot change right now

You are repeatedly arguing with a fact while still needing to respond to it.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. State the present fact as accurately and narrowly as possible.
  2. Name how you feel about it without requiring approval, forgiveness, or agreement.
  3. Identify what you can influence next, including changing your circumstances or asking for help.

An example

The train has been cancelled. I am frustrated, and I need to choose another route.

Reflect

Did acknowledging the fact clarify the next choice?

Next time

Repeat the factual statement if useful; acceptance does not prevent action against an unfair situation.
