Distinguish one thought from a recurring assumption

You want to know whether a thought belongs to this situation or appears across different ones.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Write the thought from one recent event.
  2. Consider whether similar words have appeared in other settings. Record examples only if they come readily to mind.
  3. Describe the pattern tentatively: situation-specific, recurring, or not enough information.

An example

‘I will be late’ may relate to today’s traffic; ‘I always disappoint people’ is a broader statement.

Reflect

Did distinguishing the statements change what question you want to ask?

Next time

Patterns can be revisited; this is not a diagnostic classification.
