Find the first step · D2.19

Make the first action smaller

A meaningful task is so broad that starting feels difficult.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Write the task and identify the first visible action, such as opening a file or locating one item.
  2. Reduce that action until it fits the time and capacity available.
  3. Do that step if you choose, then decide whether to continue, arrange support, or stop.

An example

For sorting photos, the first action is opening the folder and selecting one group.

Reflect

Was the first step clear and small enough?

Next time

Use the actual effort required to size the next step.
