Ask for a conversation that helps you clarify a choice

Talking something through might help, but you do not want someone else to decide for you.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Choose a willing person and explain whether you want listening, questions, information, or suggestions.
  2. Describe the choice, the values involved, and where you feel uncertain.
  3. Ask them to reflect what they heard, then decide what you take from the conversation.

An example

Could you help me think through what matters here? I’m not asking you to choose for me.

Reflect

Did the conversation clarify your own reasons or add pressure?

Next time

Keep the final decision with the person responsible for it.
