Compare options and competing needs · D3.8

Bring facts and feelings into the same decision

You are considering only practical facts or only an emotional reaction.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Write the relevant facts and constraints.
  2. Separately name your feelings, preferences, and what matters to you.
  3. Choose a response that takes both kinds of information seriously, acknowledging any tradeoff.

An example

The event is affordable, but I feel stretched and value rest. I may choose a shorter visit rather than the whole evening.

Reflect

Which piece of information would have been missed by considering only one side?

Next time

Review the decision when either the facts or your needs change.
