Find what matters in a choice · S5.2

Check a choice against a value you hold

You want to compare a planned action with something you say matters to you.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Name the value and what it would look like in this situation.
  2. Describe the proposed action and any constraints or competing responsibilities.
  3. Choose whether to keep, change, or reconsider the action, noting a tradeoff rather than judging your character.

An example

I value honesty. I can say the work is unfinished instead of offering a deadline I cannot meet.

Reflect

Does the choice reflect the value as realistically as the circumstances allow?

Next time

If helpful, use the two-question check with a trusted person: what matters here, and what action fits?
