Check what an avoidance choice is doing for you
You are repeatedly putting off an ordinary situation and want to understand why.
Everyday practice
Try these steps
- Describe what you are avoiding and what avoiding it provides immediately, such as privacy, relief, or protection of time.
- Consider the later costs and whether there is a real risk, unmet need, or practical barrier involved.
- Choose a proportionate next step: maintain a boundary, change the task, get information, or seek help planning an approach.
An example
I delay asking a question because the instructions are confusing. I can send one specific question instead of tackling the whole task.
Reflect
Does avoiding the situation serve a needed boundary or block something you want?
Next time
Reassess with the facts of the situation rather than treating all avoidance as a problem.
