Handle disagreement or take a pause · S14.2

Choose a relationship response while emotions are present

You feel pulled toward an immediate response in an ordinary disagreement.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Name the feeling and the response you are considering.
  2. Check what the situation needs and whether either person wants a pause.
  3. Choose a response that respects your needs and the other person's boundaries, including postponing the discussion.

An example

I feel disappointed and want to keep arguing; I can ask whether we should pause before deciding.

Reflect

Did the response fit the situation rather than demand harmony?
