Handle disagreement or take a pause · S9.7

Use a physical cue to request a pause

You notice a cue that you are finding a conversation difficult.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Describe your cue without assigning it a cause: for example, gripping a cup or speaking faster.
  2. Decide whether continuing, slowing down, or taking a break would suit you.
  3. Communicate the choice plainly: 'I need a moment to think before I answer.'

An example

I notice I am speaking over you. I want to pause and hear the rest.

Reflect

Did the pause help you choose your next response?

Next time

Agree on a pause phrase with a willing conversation partner if useful.
