Make room for mixed feelings about a limit
You want to set a boundary and also worry about its effect on a relationship.
Everyday practice
Try these steps
- Write each concern separately, such as protecting time and wanting to be helpful.
- Name what you can realistically offer without erasing the limit, including offering nothing further if that is your choice.
- Rehearse a sentence that acknowledges your position without requiring you to resolve every feeling first.
An example
I wish I could help, but I cannot take on the project.
Reflect
Does the sentence represent your actual decision rather than a compromise made only to remove discomfort?
Next time
Talk through the mixed feelings separately if helpful.
