Build a cue and a small routine · S3.6

Reduce the setup for a routine

A repeated task takes effort to organize each time.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Choose one task you want to repeat and list the materials or decisions needed to begin.
  2. Prepare one part in advance, such as keeping materials together or writing the first step where you will see it.
  3. Try the setup on the next occasion and notice whether it reduced preparation or created a new inconvenience.

An example

I’ll keep the stamps with the envelopes so posting a letter needs fewer searches.

Reflect

Which part of starting became easier, if any?

Next time

Adjust the setup; there is no required deadline for a routine to become automatic.
