Decide what to take from feedback

Feedback conflicts with how you see yourself or a situation.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Write the specific observation or request in the feedback, separating it from labels or insults.
  2. Consider the person’s information, context, and whether you need an example or clarification.
  3. Choose what to act on, investigate, or decline, and explain that choice to yourself.

An example

‘The report was hard to follow’ is worth asking about; ‘You are careless’ is not a specific revision instruction.

Reflect

What part was useful, and what did you reasonably reject?

Next time

You can consider feedback without accepting every judgment.
