Find a workable option between fixed positions

Two people have different preferences and want to see whether a shared option exists.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. State each person's concern in terms they recognize.
  2. Identify any shared aim and any boundary that cannot be compromised.
  3. Generate one option that addresses both concerns, or acknowledge honestly that no shared option is available.

An example

One person wants company and the other needs quiet. A short visit in a quieter place might suit both.

Reflect

Does the option address the actual concerns, or merely split the difference?

Next time

Try it only if both agree and review how it worked.
