Tell a fuller account of an experience · S13.17

Include agency without denying difficulty

An account of a struggle leaves out the choices you did have.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Describe the difficulty and the limits on your control.
  2. Identify a choice, request, refusal, or use of support you actually made, if any.
  3. Add that detail without calling the whole experience beneficial or blaming yourself for limits.

An example

I could not change the delay, but I asked for accurate information and arranged another plan.

Reflect

Does the account recognize both agency and constraint?

Next time

Leave room for times when options were genuinely limited.
