Describe yourself with room to change · S11.17
Replace a fear-based identity label with a current description
A difficulty has become a statement about who you are.
Everyday practice
Try these steps
- Write the label and the specific situations you associate with it.
- Describe the current difficulty, its impact, and relevant variation across settings.
- State what support or information you want without promising a story of overcoming fear.
An example
Instead of 'I cannot cope anywhere,' I say, 'Unfamiliar appointments are difficult, and clear information helps me prepare.'
Reflect
Is the description more precise than the label?
Next time
Update it as circumstances change.
