Separate facts, predictions and interpretations · D8.8
Separate the assumptions in a chain of reasoning
Several linked assumptions make a situation seem to have only one outcome.
Everyday practice
Try these steps
- Write the chain as separate sentences: ‘If this, then that, which would mean…’.
- Mark which links are observed facts, predictions, preferences, or assumptions.
- Choose one link to question or investigate rather than trying to resolve the whole chain at once.
An example
If I ask a question, they may think I am unprepared; I am predicting that reaction, not observing it.
Reflect
Which link has the strongest evidence, and which is uncertain?
Next time
Return to one link at a time if useful.
