Handle disagreement or take a pause · S15.1

Use a plain-language pause request

You want to stop an ordinary conversation or task before deciding what comes next.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Choose a short phrase that communicates your need without explaining its history.
  2. Use it and identify the practical next step you want, such as quiet, space, or clarification.
  3. Decide whether to return based on your choice and circumstances, not a required score change.

An example

I need to pause this topic. I will let you know whether I want to continue.

Reflect

Was the phrase clear enough?

Next time

Agree on the phrase with a willing support person if useful.
