Answer self-criticism with accuracy · S6.1
Answer a harsh thought accurately
Your self-talk has turned a mistake into a judgment of your whole self.
Everyday practice
Try these steps
- Write the harsh sentence as a thought you noticed, not a fact about you.
- Describe the specific event and replace the insult with a fair description of what happened.
- Add one useful response: repair something, ask a question, or take a break. You can rehearse the sentence with someone you trust.
An example
Instead of 'I am useless,' try 'I missed this detail. I can correct it and check the next draft.'
Reflect
Which words were accurate enough to believe?
Next time
Keep the accurate sentence where you can find it after a similar mistake.
