Answer self-criticism with accuracy · S10.9

Use the standard you would apply fairly to someone else

You are judging yourself by a rule you would not use for another person.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Describe the event without your name or self-insults.
  2. Consider what you would reasonably expect from someone with the same information and constraints.
  3. Apply that standard to yourself, including responsibility for any repair that is actually needed.

An example

If a colleague misunderstood an unclear instruction, I would ask them to clarify and revise, not call them incapable.

Reflect

Is your revised standard both fair and accountable?

Next time

Use the same standard consistently rather than lowering it only to feel better.
