Pause before choosing an action · D3.5
Check an urge before choosing a different action
An emotion is urging an everyday action you are unsure about.
Everyday practice
Try these steps
- Name the urge and check the relevant facts, risks, and likely consequences.
- Decide whether the urge fits the situation and your priorities; doing the opposite is not automatically better.
- If another action fits better, choose a small version and observe what happens.
An example
I want to cancel a routine planning call because I assume I will be criticized. I can first check the agenda and decide from that information.
Reflect
Was the alternative based on the situation rather than a rule to oppose every feeling?
Next time
Review the outcome and seek individualized guidance for situations involving significant fear or risk.
