Pause before choosing an action · S15.14

Use a movement cue to pause an automatic action

You notice an ordinary action beginning before you have decided whether to do it.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Name the action you noticed, such as reaching for the send button or interrupting.
  2. Pause that action if practical and identify the decision it would make.
  3. Choose deliberately whether to continue, revise, or wait.

An example

My hand moves toward sending the message; I reread the request before deciding.

Reflect

Did noticing the action create a useful decision point?

Next time

Choose a specific cue rather than monitoring every movement.
