Offer support while keeping limits · D5.15

Make room for both people’s limits

You and another person have different needs in a shared arrangement.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. State your need or limit specifically and invite theirs.
  2. Identify where the requests fit together and where they conflict.
  3. Choose an arrangement both accept if one exists, or acknowledge the disagreement and consider another option.

An example

You need quiet and I need to take a call. I can use another room if that is available.

Reflect

Did both people have a real opportunity to disagree?

Next time

Mutual respect can include deciding an arrangement does not work.
