State a need or make a request · S12.10

Use an ordinary cue to communicate a need

You notice a change during a task that suggests you want an adjustment.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Describe the cue without diagnosing it, such as speaking faster or repeatedly shifting position.
  2. Identify a current need you can communicate.
  3. Make a specific request and check whether the arrangement helps.

An example

I am finding it hard to follow; could we slow down or use written notes?

Reflect

Was the request more useful than interpreting the cue?

Next time

Choose cues that are noticeable without constant self-monitoring.
